Removal of phosphorous from wastewater from metal coating plants

The problem

The wash water in a large metal coating plant contained high concentration of Phosphorous. The existing waste treatment performed neutralization to a pH which obviously did not remove the phosphate. The source of the excess Phosphate was not clearly defined.

The solution
SWDP LTD. performed a monitoring of the various flows in the factory to identify the source of the phosphate.
A process was then developed trying to use a large part of the existing equipment. The process is based on precipitation and removal of AlPO4 by addition of Potassium Aluminate.
The existing plant was retrofitted to implement the process.
